PORDORGTRA.

(Written for the Observer.)

On the old Murrumbidgee, when lambing was nigh, No jolly sundowner was happy as I ; As from station to station I tramped it all day, On the wallaby track with my Pordorgtra. But at last I was forced for the shearing to start, With a very light swag and o- still lighter heart ; As the landlady said, in her ignorant way, — " Make thracks out o' dis, widyer Pordorgtra." Pordorg, he'd some old-fashioned tricks, to be sure ! And he kept me in mutton, because I was poor : When the squatter, so mean, sent us hungry away ; I had always a friend in my Pordorgtra. When the landlady frowned, and the barmaid grew cold, When my cheque it was spent, and my swag it was sold, How serenely we snoozed in the stables all day; And I licked him — for pastime — my Pordorgtra. But one day, down at G-oulbourn, while taking a nap, fie was grabbed by a long, prowling, bogtrotting trap ; To some dreadful Golgotha they dragged him away ; And there spifflicated my Pordorgtra. Where now shall I go, broken down and hard up? I'm undone through the loss of that, elegant pup; To the old Murrumbidgee, so far, far away, I will starve on the road without Pordorgtra ! Kangaroo.
