LATEST.
I have just received a copy of the Observer containing my first despatch. I consider your footnote libellous. The truth ■of the affair is this : Entering a certain pub. the landlord confronted me with an enormous account owing by yourself, which, he said, he had been informed I would settle ■when I called. I protested. He became •exceedingly violent, threatening all manner •of things. Remembering that self-preserva-tion is the first law of nature (I'm a child of nature, you know), I thought it safest to pay the amount, and after charge you with it. Please forward the next advance to the enclosed address. [Don't you wish you may get it ? — Ed. Obs.]
