The following is a description of the costumes worn by the ladies at the recent ball at Morrinsville : — Miss Rowe, cream satin, handsomely trimmed with silk and braid ; Miss Warren, a very handsome blue sateen, trimmed with crimson roses; Miss Turnbull, blue silk, with white lace trimmings ; Miss Tickelpenny, pale salmon silk, trimmed with lace ; Miss Faulkner, pale silk llama ; Miss Barber, blue dotted silk ; Miss Bremners, blue nun's veiling, • trimmed with lace ; Mrs Bremners, white muslin, trimmed with lace, pink sash ; Miss Horrell, blue and crimson, trimmed with blue sash ; Miss Pirata, handsome black silk costume; Mrs Green, blue and white costume; Mrs Lucas, ruby velvet ; Miss McNicol, black- tarletan and skirt to match ; Miss Pickett, nun's veil and lace. The ball was a great success. Mr Gr. Faulkner acted as M.C. Miss Rowe was the belle. The picnic given by Mr Sarah, of the Hakara, at the Mangawai Heads, was a great success, and credit is due to Mr Sarah for the ability he displayed in getting things in order for the occasion. The day was devoted to racing, fishing, and other amusements, which were thoroughly enjoyed by the party. At tea time an adjournment Avas made to Mrs Clayton's beautiful little cottage by the sea side, where a substantial tea was provided by Mrs Sarah and others. After tea dancing was kept up with spirit until morning. The music was ably rendered by Messrs McMillan and Stewart. Miss Sarah kindly officiated as M.C. The ladies costumes were very pretty, some of the most noticeable being, Miss M. Stewart (belle), handsome black silk; Miss Stewart, black cashmere ; Miss Sarah, pale pink ; Miss McMillan, handsome black velvet. At intervals between the dances several songs were sung by Messrs Lobster, Leslie, and Sarah. The young* meu of Otahuhu held their annual ball on Friday, Feb. 20th, and it was quite a social gathering. Messrs Walkers' string band, assisted by Miss Harding, discoursed excellent music. Messrs McGee and Brady officiated as M.C.'s in a very efficient maimer. Refreshments of the very best were supplied by Johnstone and Burns. The following were some of the most noteworthy costumes worn on the occasion : — Miss Wills, black broche satin evening dress, with silver jewellery (the acknowledged belle) ; Miss Brady, pale pink ecru nun's veiling, with pink and blue bows, silver jewellery ; Miss Johnstone, black velvet, with spangles and real lace ; Miss Warren, heliotrope silk, with pink and cream bows, silver jewellery ; Miss Harding, black silk, with Maltese lace trimmings ; Miss Baker, peacock-blue satin bodice, Indian muslin skirt ; Miss Hunter, pink plush bodice, white Indian muslin skirt, with silver flowers ; Miss Page, black satin, ruby and velvet bows ; Miss Connolly, navy blue nun's veiling ground, cardinal half Maori ; Miss Cleary, cream nun's veiling, cardinal flounces of lace ; Miss McGee, black ottoman silk, cardinal and black effects, gold jewellery ; Miss Harvey, pink ecru silk bodice, black silk skirt, pink effects ; Miss Milgrew. cream nun's veiling, brown silk trimmings ; Miss M. Brady, black cashmere, low bodice, cardinal effects; Miss C McGee. brocaded sateen evening dress, pink satin effects ; Miss Oliver, heliotrope silk, Maltese trimmings silver jewellery ; Miss Stapleton, black merino, lace effects ; Miss Coyle, pale blue nun's veiling, silver grey and tulle trimmings ; Mrs Hurst, white Indian muslin, lace flounces, looped with cardinal roses, gold jewellery ; Mrs Warren, fawn brocaded silk, electric blue trimmings ; Mrs Hunter, white Indian muslin, sashes of black ribbon ; Mrs Gibson, canary, with brown and white lace. Mrs Hunt was belle of the married ladies. Misses McGee, Brady, and Coyle were pronounced the best dancers in the room, and Messrs Brady, McGee, Scarborough, Muir, and French were the best dancers amongst the gentlemen.

Mrs Bennett: White nun's veiling dress, with black trimmings ; Henri hat. Miss Patterson : Very pretty grey Carmelite dress ; grey hat, with feathers. Miss Isaacs : Handsome cream costume, with cream lace trimmings ; hat with feather. Miss Rook : Stylish olive-green nun's veiling ; pretty hat en suite. Miss Macky : Loudon smock nun's veiling ; white postboy hat. Mrs Webb : China silk dress, With sewn work trimmings ; pretty white straw Henri hat. Mrs Lawrie : Pretty black princess bonnet ; handsome black silk dress. Miss Crocker : Pretty white nun's veiling ; white postboy hat. Miss Woodyear *. Pretty costume of marine cloth ; mixed straw jockey cap, trimmed with lace. The Misses Leydon looked very nice in cream costumes, trimmed in Spanish lace; pretty straw hat, trimmed with cream feathers.
