NEW ADVERTISING DODGES.

One of the latest advertising dodges ill London i& a ghostly-looking man wrapped in a shroud and sandwiched between two coffinlid shaped boards. £Ie advertises a bloodcurdling story. An enterprising firm lias written to the Government offering to print all the Estimates and departmental papers on condition of being allowed to use the back of the cover as an advertisement of its leading articles of commerce. Another firm sent a communication to Lord "Wolsely authorising him to offer a reward of £150 to the soldier who shall first affix to the front gate of the palace at Khartoum a certain handbill detailing the virtues of a well-known patent medicine. Of course at this end of the world we are far behind John Bull an d Brother Jonathan in the genius of advertising, but still we modestly venture to suggest that the firm in question might strike out an original lineby paying a handsome subsidy to the Mahdi for affixing copies of the puff to the posteriors of the Arabs, which would be the most likely place to catch the eyes of the British soldiers.

A very elegant dinner- dress is composed of lieliotroxDe satin bodice and train, spotted with gold, over a plain satin petticoat witli honeycomb front and Neapolitan violets and ivy leaves, and handsome lace in the neck and sleeves.
