A ball was given in Virginia Villa to a select party of ladies and gentlemen by Mr D. K. McLeod, on the eye of his departure from the district. The . front entrance was tastefully lighted up. .with Japanese lamps, arranged in a manner that reflected credit on the decorator and light on the place beneath. Miss Nelly McLean ably presided at the piano, : .and r Mr J. A. Morrison acted as M.C. The following were the principal dresses : — Miss E. Gell, peacock green silk, black plush trimmings ; Miss K. McKay, black velvet, trimmed with blue lace, and McGregor tartan ; Miss W. McKay, black cashmere, trimmed with Lang Syne ribbon ; Miss .Ann McMillan, green velvet, trimmed Delhi lace ; Miss K. McMillan, black homespun, trimmed with McAulay plaid; Miss Annie Gowk, full Aberdeen tartan; Miss Grace McLeod (belle), stylish blue cashmere dress, trimmed with velvet ; Miss Mi^ria Weil, pink sateen, trimmed with turkey xed; Mi=s' Sarah McLeod, blue dungaree, trimmed with white Tairoa; Miss. A. McLeod, black satin, with Finlayson plaid sash. During the intervals between the dances Miss M. Finlayson and Mr Neil McLeod entertained the company by singing a choice selection of Gaelic songs. Mrs Gulliver: Very pretty grenade-coloured, ottoman corded silk costume ; cream-coloured postboy hat and feathers ; gloves and parasol to match.
