Into the summer palace of my heart A shadow forced its way,Around me the sweetest song of bird, And bloom of the scented may ; And life "was fair — O, passing fair ! ' And fragrant the zephyr's breath, But into the open portal of my heart Came the black angel — death. O ! messenger of sorrow, come not now, I love dear earth so well, . ■/■ ■ O ! let me but roam the pleasant wood — The paths by the fairy del}, ; For flowers are sweet— O, passing sweet, And sweet is he zephyr's breath, ! But closer to the chamber of my heart, I Came the sad angel— death. O ! messenger of heaven, let me stay 'Till the autumn leases are low. Yet, how gentle thy hand, how sweet thy voice, I scarce wish to stay her now ; .
