THE TESTIMONIAL DODGE.

Two fashionable ladies belonging to the hun ton dashed up to the establishment of a popular Queen-street jeweller the other day, alighted with charming grace from their neat turn out, and asked to be shown some pretty brooches that were in the window. The jeweller politely handed out tho tray with its glittering contents, and the

ladies having admiringly inspected them, the following conversation ensued. Mrs N. : " May I ask are you an admirer of Dr 11. ? " Jeweller: "Well, yes, madam; I have admired him to the amount of £2o or £30 during the last few years." Mrs N. : "Dill, is going Home ; we are getting up a testimonial to him, and, as you are always liberal, we have come to ask you for a subscription." Jeweller: " Ladies, I don"t see any necessity for any testimonial in this case. .Dr 11. has waited on his customers, and so have I. We have both been paid for our services. He has had a testimonial from his customers to the tune of some thousands of pounds, and is going home to enjoy it. If I am asked to subscribe in a ease of real distress, 1 put my hand in my pocket whether 1 can afford it or not, but, as I have already remarked, I fail to perceive the necessity for a testimonial in this case." Mrs i\ T . : '■ Oh ! Then we shan't require any brooches to-day. Jeweller (always polite) : v: Thank you, ladies, good day." Exit ladies in high dudgeon.
