HUMBLE TRUST.
(Suggested by the recent scene in the Cemetery.)
(WjUTTEX FOR THE " ObSEUVKIJ.") Polly, go fetch, the parson, I'm awfully queer to-night, Not that I thinks I'm dying — • Xot so bad as that, lass, quite ; But I've been thinking, Polly, Of rows in the churchyard there, When them as owns no Saviour Stop'd a chap from saying a prayer. They said "they wanted no such cant And bosh like parsons tell, As how there ain't no heaven, Or devil, or God, or hell — ' That man is a dog, and, dying, Can never rise again;" But I tell you what they're doing, They're like to a second Cain. For they beats cut the brains of reason, And states belief quite dead, And they gives us only darkness, And death and doubt instead ; And it may' nt be all quite gospel What ever the parsons tell, Yet its nice to hear of heaven, Tho' they speak sometimes of hell. And there may'nt be a resurrection For a cove who dies like me, Yet it eases the awful longing To think that there may bo Forgiveness for all the sorrow, And pardon, for all the crime, And a corner in heaven somewhere For sorrowing hearts like mine. 80 fetch the parson, Polly, I feel awful queer to-night, Don't let the rabble bury ]Vle like a dog outright ; For tho' it mayn't be gospel What parsons love to say, I can't do much, harm to listen, If he'd but come and pray. Don't leave me, my little woman, There's no time to fetch, him now, Too late for all but pardon — To His dear will I bow ; But never let them whisper, " He was only a worthless clod," But say, " as a humble sinner He trusted in his God." < W. E. Wills. Jan. 27th, 1883.
