DR. JAMES L. YORK.

Du. Yui:k", whose portrait we give on 4th< page, was born in New York in 1830, of parents too poor to give him much education but like (icrald Massoy, Koberfc Collier, andi others, he is a self-educated and self-made man. The scanty opportunities afforded him in his youthful days of access to books lie made the best use use of, and so laid a solid foundation, for the acquisitions of later years. At juv early age he became an active member of the Methodist Church, and when thirty years old. was made a local preacher, regularly travelling a circuit for many years, lie'afterwards embraced Unitarian views, which led' him to the study of Darwin, and finally to a conviction of the truth of that celebrated, writer's views on evolution. For seventeen^ years past he has been lecturing on this and kindred subjects, and is now making - a tour of the Australian Colonies asan exponent of liberal views on physical and social science. His home is at Sun Jose, the garden city of California, where he sat in the State Legislature of ISSO, his services being highly valued' by his constituents.. Dr York is an eminently practical speaker* and applies the discoveries of modern thought to the solution of the problems of social life. Ho comes to us highly recommended by the American press.
