A HEART LOVE TRIED TO BREAK.

(Written for the Observer.)

My heart went out in its life-boat sailing — Over the waves of a golden sea, And the song of hope was fond -and tender, When hearts were true and you loved me. And over the billows of love's devotion, My life-boat weathered the golden wave, With full sail flying, tho' the surge was sighing — Another true heart will find its grave. Another wreck on the restless ocean, Another heart 'neath its wave is drowned, Another life-boat, lost and foundered, Where never a record of fate is found. O. bitter woman ! how soft; and tender Tour dear eyes shove in (lashes bright, And dazzled many a heart- broke lover> As beacons flash on a storm-toss'd night.. 'Tis but the frail barque on fch«j stormy ocean, That never was taut or trimly built ; 'Tis only a weak heart, my little sweetheart, Grets 'wrecked on the rocks of love or guilt. My heart came back with full sail flying, From lover's land and its golden sea, The waves were ringing, the surges singing, "Your heart was false to love and me." You never loved wirlithe same devotion — You knew no sorrow, ;md iVlr. no smart ; For a summer season were queen of treason : Empress of all but a true man's heart. And so, little queen, thy empire's over, Thy sceptre's broken, aud ruined throne; Tho' I was onue thine own true lover, The dream is past, and my heart's mine own. W. R. Wills.
