THE GRAVE IN THE WOODS.
(Written for the Observer.)
Br Thomas Shabps, Onehunga,
'Neath this kauri sombre shade, One of Christian faith is laid — Christian handsjjhat symbol made. Closer look, arfe||!pou may mark, ■Cross and letters on the bark, Rudely carved, ooscure and dark. Fragments of a name and date, 'Time will soon obliterate, This sole record of his fate. Bead the date ! What, is it so ?— Half a century ago 'Since this sleeper was laid low ? 'Was he of that fearless band, Who first trod t,his southern land Steel in belt and gun in hand ? •Or of those who, braver still, Journey ed hither to fulfil Their great Lord and Master's will ? Young or old, or how he fell, Priest, or trader, who can tell ? Nature keeps the secret well. Time and weather hath defaced, And the growing bark effaced What the friendly hand hath traced, And the date alone reads clear ; In perchance another year Nought will mark who slumbers here. $
