SALE OF PEDIGREE STOCK.

The sale of yearlings by the ''New Zealand Stock ami Pedigree Stud" Company, at their beautiful stud farm, Sylvia Park, near Otahuhri* on Monday, was a decided success. All the youngsters offered found purchasers {^ for the most part, excellent prices. The highest price paid was for a handsome bay

filly by Cadogan from Steppe, which fell to the nod of Mr Lushington at 825 guineas. This should turn out a real clinker, as her breeding is perfect on the dam's side, showing several strains of the anxiously-sought Waxy blood, through Whalebone and Sir Hercules. Mr Lushingfcon also bought the bay colt by Api-emont from Nelly Moore at SlOgs ; brown colt, by Anteros — Lady Mary, at 210gs ; and chestnut colt, by Anteros — Fancy (full brother to The Poet), for 250gs. This last-named gentleman is a fine upstanding colt, remarkably well topped of a bright clear chestnut colour, and stands on a hardylooking set of legs ; he covers a lot of ground, and looks all over like a flier. He is, however, rather badly marked, having too much white on his face, and his white stockings are too long to please the eye. People who have once seen him with the silk up won't want to look at the colours of the rider to know him again, lie promises to be a much bigger horse than his brother, the last Cup winner. The following is the list in full: — br f by Musket — Ericyna, Hogs, Greenwood. eh c by Auteros — Faacy, 250gs, Lushington. b f by Cadogan — Crinoline, 170gs, Russell. br c by Musket — Titania, 2GOgs, Marshall. br f by Musket — Moonlight, 70gs, Greenwood. b c by Musket — Pulchra, 200gs, Mitchelson. ! br c by Musket — Pearl Ash, 140gs, Vallance. b f by Musket — Madcap, lOOgs, Greenwood. br f by Musket — Hannah, 85gs, McNeish. br c by Ciidogan or Musket — Florence McCarthy, IGOgs, Col. Fraser. b c by Anteros— Atalanta. 120gs. W. Profitt. b c by Ilandwick — Perfume, 45gs, Austin. eh f by Anteros — Tres Deuce, olgs, Allison. br c by Anteros — Lady Mary, 210gs, Lushington. eh c by Anteros — Naiad, 55gs, Greenwood. eh c by Feye — Lyra, 50gs, Hewitt. b c by Cadogan — Miss Laura, lOogs, Williamson. b c by Apremont — Nelly Moore, SlOgs, Lushington. eh c by Cadogan — Lure, 175gs, Jas. Craig (resold for 185gs to Brimblecombe). I eh c by Cadogan — Petroleuse, 200gs, Donne.

b f by Cadogan — Steppe, 325g5, Lushiagfcon. b c by Apremont or JMusket — Fairyland, 60gs, Greenwood, b f (two years) Merry Katie by Feye — Dundee's Katie, 21 gs, Percival. Dundee's Katie herself was sold for 20gs to Mr Baker. A colt by Randwick — Jenny Lind fetched 45gs, the purchaser being Mr Lumsden. br c by Musket — Medea, 50gs, Mountain. A lot of the bookmakers and jocks will proceed to the Whangarei races. I promise them a good time all round. Mr W. Hattly has resigned the position of handicapper for the Taranaki J.C., and Mr J. O. Evett has been appointed in his stead. That's good for the club and owners too. Our local sports will see by notice in this issue that Marie Louise has a consultation on the Dunedin Gup, 2000 members at ss. Marie Louise conducts all her sweeps in a manner that entitles her to the support of-' the public, and for a small sum a man has a show to make a good start in life. The Taranaki J.C. are out with a slashing programme for the 27th and 28 March. It" includes 14 events, and the principal ones are the T.J.C. Handicap, 300 soys ; the Derby, 100 soys : and the Autnmn Handicap, 12<5 soys. Altogether there is 975 soys to graft for in sUikes alone. Mr " M. O'Brien," who leased the Dauphin to stand in Taranaki district for this scnsoii, writes to " Sir Launcelot," and. sajs he hus had fifty mares to him during t!u-. season, among whom are all the cream of the. ahul matrons of the place. Amongst others was Mr li. Redwood's Fair Puritan — by Oliver Cromwell, out of Oorowaria (imported). Fair Puritan was dam of Orange Lightning, which Mr Redwood thought so highly of for the Dunedin Cup of 1879. Mr Vallance, who paid 140 guineas for the handsome yearling son of Musket and Pearl Ash at the Stud Company's, on Monday, had the. misfortune to lose him by accident on the following morning, lie was stalled at Onehuuga, preparatory to shipment South, and by some means broke

his Ice* in the stall. I believe Mr Vallancs was only acting- for Mr G. Gf. Stead in the purchase, so I don't know who will be the loser. Ib is much to be regretted that this fine youngster should have come to such an untimely end, as Pearl Ash's former foal, Pearl, was a clinker at two-years-old, and this one promised even better. I would like to call the attention of the authorities of the Auckland Bacing Club to the construction of the water- jump at Ellerslie. As at present constructed a horse which, fails to clear the water has a drop of seven feet at least into the bottom of the hole, and there falls on puddled clay, which is apt to bog a horse and take a lot out of him, besides the likelihood of injury to him. through the heavy drop. K ow, my plan is a simple one, easy of adoption, and light of cost, and is this : To slope the bottom of the pond up from say four feet at the hurdle side to say a few inches at the landing side, so that if a horse fell short, he would strike the bottom on almost a level, and avoid any danger of damage to himself. If this plan had been followed on the 2nd inst., I candidly think that not one of those who fell at this jump would have come to grief ; and I hope to see it at least considered if not adopted for the future.
