MEANNESS AND IMPUDENCE. *► rTitE following little incident is ilkisti ative of the fact that meanness and impudence sometimes meet with their reward : — A young surveyor promised a donation of us for the promotion of the amusement of the fair sex in the township where he resides. The fair canvasser who had extracted the promise reminded him that all had paid but he. The mean man said ho really could ■not afford to hand over. Being noted for his meanness, the young lady taunted him with his failing, when he then pulled 5s out of his pocket and held it towards her, remarking at the same time that he was only joking, but that he would not pay over now, but the fair one was too quick for him and snatched the money. The mean man attempted to recover it, and in doing so forgot the respect that his due to the sex. The young lady's mother appeared on the scene at this juncture, and the mean animal thought it time to desist. The young lady was of a different opinion, and her riding whip being to hand, we are glad to relate, the happy thought struck her that her hurt feelings required solace, and that a vigorous application of whip-cord would be a wholesome lesson. The- surveyor retired from the scene with the tears trickling from the end of his nose. Next day his business called him away from the township. There is a house to let and furniture for sale.
