The Observer. Saturday, October 27th, 1883. A SMART PRACTITIONER.

In a vecent issue of the. Observes, we reviewed the conduct of a certain gay legal Lothario who had to compound for his sins. It would now appear that his method is to recoup himseif by imposing upon clients. One client in question was introduced to him by letter as a friend who' might advise him in case of monetary difficulties. The Lothario had been a lodger in the house of the gentleman who gave the letter of introduction. The letter was presented, and some ordinary^ conversation took place, but no legal opinion wac either asked or given. Some time afterwards L' bill for 6s Sd was'senl. to the gentleman who presented the letter. He at once wrote to the principal of the firm for an explanation, and stated inter alia that the subordinate who sent the bill was almost as good at charging as his namesake, but. that it was as great a piece of sharp practice as that of " Dodsou and Fogg." The principal replied, thanking the writer for the letter, and stating that he had been ignorant of the circum^, stances, but had found the entry in his book, and scut the account in the usual course of .business, but the question of payment rested with, the recipient of the letter. There the matter remains for the present, but it is just one of those cases of , unconscionable greed which iv England would I result in a legal practitioner being struck off the ' rolls.
