ANOTHER MONSTER NATIVE LAND SWINDLE.
Rumours are. afloat in town of a native land swindle, which is said to take the cake from all previous frauds of the kind. The persons implicated, are said to be four men who move in the highest circles. The version of the story which is current in the clubs and amongst the quidnuncs is that a deed has been forged, which purports to contain the signatures of some of the leading chiefs in the King Country, the property in question being a very valuable block of land, situate near Auckland, and forming part of the ancestral territory which was not confiscated in the Waikato War. The deed purports to have been duly translated to the signatories by a Maori interpreter, who, however, was too wideawake to attach his, name 5 but the document bears the genuine signature of a well-known Justice of the Peace. The deed was not submitted in the usual course to the Frauds Commissioners, but registered directly! Meantime, the natives who are alleged to have signed the deed deny all knowledge of it, and repudiate the signatures. A nice little expose has been impending for some time, but it is extremely probable th*t a compromise will be effected, in order to avoid scandal.
