MR HANNAFORD'S GRIEVANCE.

A man with a grievance has been defined as a social nuisance. Mr Hanmiford is in a chronic state of grievance, and his latest grievance is about a nuisance. This may sound paradoxical, but. it is true. He now writes us one of liis characteristic letters with reference to a paragraph in our last issue, commenting on some peculiarly strong epithets which he applied to Mr. Goldie, the Sanitary Inspector, in a communication to the City Council. Mr Unnnaford now reiterates those opprobrious terms, and solemnly affirms them " before high Heaven."' We have not space for his letter, but give the concluding portion which contains the whole gist of the matter : — If what I have charged G-oldie with be true, then only one course is open to the Council, namely, to ignominiously expel the Sanitary Inspector from his office ; if, on the other hand, I have been guilty of penning lying statements, it is for the Council to prosecute me criminally for malicious slander. The Council's duty is to protect their officers in the discharge of legitimate duties, but when an oificer uses his powers to wreak his private spite, and gratify a revengeful spirit, the segis of the Council should be thrown over the assailed."
