THE AUCKLAND HOSPITAL.

? :)-"V'i A great change has been effected in the management of the Auckland Hospital, and which, we are glad' to say, is for the better. Between two andj.three montJis ago the wards were attended by ; %urses who were actually nothing more than • patients themselves, and who could hai'dly move about. But now, thanks to the new management, the wards are under neatly dressed female nurses,

who are very attentive to the wants of the patients. But another much-needed improvement is to give the house-surgeon a room to himself, where he can receive his out-door patients. The arrangements just now are that he receives them in No. 1 Male Ward, begins his work of dressing etc., about 11 a.m. and is not done till some time after 1 p.m., thus being in the room when the patients that are lying in the ward around are at their meal. As one of them who is now an inmate of the Hospital said to a visitor the other day : — " Sometimes we can see the open wounds, and when that occurs I have to lay aside my dinner without touching it. At other times, when my appetite is not very good, the very thought of what is going on in the ward makes me disgusted." We hope when the Dispensary is connected with the Hospital that there will be a room put aside for the doctor to receive his out-door patients. It may be added that great praise is deserved by Dr Mackellar for his kind and gentle treatment of the patients.
