WHERE THE EAGLES GATHER.
There is a rather funny story told about Tawhiao at Cambridge. He received a grand reception, of course. In the evening, after the opera was over, Mr T., who supposed that the Maori King (?) must possess a large area of land, instead of being a niere squatter on the lands of the Ngatimaniapotos, " boosed up " his majesty with square gin, Arekatera being the caterer. The latter was at great pains to point out to the reigning deity that T. " had the keys " of the company, whatever that meant, but Tawhiao appeared to be more concerned as to the holder of the corkscrew. Mr T. took nothing by his motion, but his majesty was put to the plebeian indignity of having to saddle his own horse, as he departed in the morning. Kings like these are but moulded out of common clay.
