N,B. — Dunedin Cup will open Ist January, 1883. ADA MANTUA has very great pleasure in stating that the local in the Evening Star of Wednesday concerning registered letters was only partially true, to this extent— that about three months ago about fourteen letters were compulsorily registered by the Postmaster in Auckland, containing notes, on which he levied Is each, which Ada refused ; the consequence being these letters went to Wellington, and the money was refunded to the senders. The local refers to Ada only ; the same operation was performed upon the Fidelity Company and the " Zoo Jumbo " Consultations. '. The statement that all letters were compulsorily registered from Auckland or elsewhere is incorrect ; the case above mentioned is the only occasion. The Post Office do not compulsorily register except they contain coin ; but subscribers should send P.O. orders, this being the safest and easiest mode in transmitting money, for in event of loss can be traced.
