HYMEN AND MAMMON.
A few . months ago the Thames was in expectation of the fulfilment of an engagement between a portly young new-chum and the daughter of a local nob. • Our young friend was of good family, and having a small pot of money to fling about, rained a heavy shower of favours upon his adoree. All went well • until, tired of loafing, the hero took a billet in town, at which the worthy parents-in-law-to-be turned up their noses, and after constant coldness for some time, gave him the cold shoulder altogether. The young lady consoled herself with a bank clerk and all was forgotten. Not stamped out, however, only smouldering. A year passed. The young man's friends at home made a " rise," and his prospects rose in proportion. The news travelled fast, and within a week he had epistles from papa and mama lamenting the mischief those horrid gossips had made between them, and welcoming him back to their family circle. Very condescending, but the young blood didn't see it. So much for Thames snobocracv.
