SHODDY AT RUSSELL.
Independence Day at Russell was remarkable .chiefly for the degree of independence displayed by some of the jam-tarts of that exceedingly oily rand piscatorial village. The captains of the whalers in harbour resolved to give an invitation •ball. The people who form the cream of that •ancient and fishlike place draw the line at third mates, and consequently fourth mates were omitted , from the list of invitations: One captain declined - -to accept the invitation unless his fourth mate ■was included ; Mrs.H.'s dignity was shocked because a female domestic had received<m invitation ; and Miss H. would not go if Miss J. went. Another captain, who was smitten with the charms
of a certain Abigail, remained away because the girl was not invited ; and it is said that a third skipper took the huff because smoking and chewing tobacco in the ball-room were strictly prohibited. Despite many attempts to throw oil on the troubled waters, there has been a good deal of wailing and some blubbering over the business. The asistocraey of Russell may mix their liquors, but they are determined not to mix their society.
