THE CITIZENS' BALL.

The Citizens' Ball, in honour of Commodore Erskine and the officers of H.M.S. INelson, took place on Thursday, July 6bh, in the Choral Hall, and was attended by about 370 ladies and gentlemen. The decorations were very artistic and pretty, the arrangements, in all essential matters, tolerably good, and the catering in Mr C. Canning's most efficient style. The ball was opened shortly after 8 o'clock, Commodore Erskine with Mrs J. M. Clark, and Mr J. M. Clarke with Mrs Gillies, vis-a-vis, being of the leading set. The music was efficiently supplied by Mr Impoy's band, the programme of dances being as follows : Quadrille, Lirrline ; waltz, Blue Danube ; waltze, ./Esthetic ; polka, Bric-a-Brac ; lancers, Pirates of Penzance ; galop, Catastrophe ; waltz, Weit Vondir ; mazurka, Fairy Bells; lancers, Coote's Favourit ; galop, Weber, Stock and Stein ; polka, Pergola ; waltz, Loved and Lost ; waltz, Mon Rove; waltz, Pirates of Penzance; quadrille, Winter Garden ; gallop, Don't be in a Hurry ; polka, Return to the Spring ; waltz, Tiny ; lancers, Patience ; waltz, Soldaten Lieder ; mazurka, Confidence ; galop, Reiter ; waltz, Briso de Nuits ; waltz, Manola. The guests, from H.M.S. Nelson, present were Commodore Erskine, Staff-Commander Osborne, Lieutenants Tillard, Fenton, Hon Gerald Digby, Powell, M. W. Miss Haultnin wore a pretty dress of pale pink satin and Indian muslin, with pink flowers. Miss Churton looked well in a tastefully-made dress of white satin. Mrs Ching wore mignonette-coloured silk ; bodice, of olive-green plush, with bead trimmings of both shades. Mrs J. M. Clark's dress of peacock-green satin, with ombre satin and creme lace, was much, admired. \ Mrs Murray Moore wore an elegant dress of lemon-coloured broche and silk, with garniture of tiny crimson and creme flowers; Mrs T. Morrin's dress was noticeable for its artistic combination of colour. It was composed of dead gold satin, with just a soupgon of palesfc blue ; mousquetaire gloves!
