CAPTURE OF WINIATA.
POETEAITS OF PACEEE, AND WINIATA. The capture of the miscreant, Winiata, 17111 be a feather in the Ministerial cap, though the credit belongs altogether to the police, and more particularly to the half-caste, Barlow, and to Sergeant McG-overn and Constable Gillies who. planned the capture. The details of the capture hare been given at such length in our contemporaries that.it is unnecessary to recapitulate them.
The above is an excellent portrait taken from a photograph of the ill-fated Edwin Packer, who was murdered by Winiata on the morning of the 27th January, 1876. Packer was the son of a well-to-do Devonshire farmer, and had only been six months in the Colony. He was employed on the farm of Mr Cleghorn, Epsom, and being an excellent workman, a good linguist, an accomplished musician, and a frank, kind - hearted young man, he was respected and esteemed by all who came into contact with him.
