FIRE AND BRIMSTONE.
Happily the orthodox lake of fire and brimstone is rapidly burning out, and will soon take its place among the extinct volcanoes. But there are still a few gentle souls who, fancying , themselves already possessed of a through-passage ticket for the New Jerusalem, indulge the' fond hope that a sultry region is reserved for their enemies. The other day the elders of a certain religious body in Shortland met in solemn conclave and adjudged a member of the congregation guilty of damnable heresy because he refused to express a belief iv the doctrine of an eternal Gtahenna, coupling the resolution with a civil intimation that if the recalcitrant did not recant and renounce his heretical opinions he would be excommunicated, and consigned to the place of everlasting torment. Evidently there are still a few people who " hope to merit heaven by making earth a hell."
