APATHETIC CHEISTIANS.
The following story will serve to show the " lack . of true religion " in some of the northern town- . ships. On Sunday evening last at the usual hour for commencing worship there were assembled in the church at BE — — the clergyman, two pious young gentlemen, and the lady organist. The rev;, gentleman uttered some impatient remark as to the tardiness of the townsfolk in attending ovening service. One of the young gentlemen observed, consolingly, that the roads were sloppy and bad. "Ah, .but," petulantly ejaculated the . clergyman, "the people would come if. any of those present would ring the bell." " Those present " maintaining a faraway look in their eyes as if they did not comprehend the hint, the rev. .gentleman announced presently that there would . be no service, and commenced extinguishing the - lamps. The two young men sauntered tho'ugh'ty fully away. The worst -of the affair is that by '.this time a goodly number of the congregation .•were wending their way towards the church and got within twenty yards of it in time to witness the extinguishing of ttie last lamp and the disappearance. of the parson.
