AMENITIES OF THE TABLE D'HOTE.

An intensely funny story is told by a recent visitor to Waiwera. Among tke guests at that delightful sanatorium was a well-known " medicine man," who is able to beat even the farfamed Holloway's pills with his universal herbal remedies. The herbalist is rather an epicure in his way, and his physique is sufficient of itself to illustrate his partiality to good living. At dinner one evening he was seated beside a lady who moves in fashionable society, and is one of the acknowledged leaders of ton in the circle in which she moves. Like the herbalist, she furnishes ocular demonstration of the happy effects of a generous diet, and a contented mind. Her position entitled her to the post of honour at the head of the table, which she filled with charming grace and efficiency. The herbalist, having experimented upon every dish in the menu, finally settled down to the turkey at the head of the table, and assisted himself to vegetables by upsetting the entire contents of a dish of peas into his . plate. Having made a very hearty meal, he threw himself back in his chair, smiled with the

air of a man who felt that he had done his duty-

and was at peace with himself and all the world, and then patting the lady, on the back' with his great fat hand, exclaimed in a confidential-tone, " That's the way we do it,'ole gal, aint it ?" Our informant says he feels utterly unequal to the task of describing the look of horror and disgust that appeared on the face of the lady, and the terror-stricken expression on the countenances of the other guests.
