FRIENDLY ADVICE.
If Mr Whitaker becomes the Premier of New Zealand there are certain things he may as well remember. In 1865, when Mr Goschen w"as appointed Vice-President of the Board of Trade, he relinquished his position as head of a well-known mercantile firm, and resigned his position as a director of the Bank of England. When he was succeeded by Mr Stephen Cave he also gave up his directorship in the Bank of England, considering it, he said, " inconvenient that public men in his responsible position should be supposed liable to be actuated by personal or interested motives when dealing with commercial or monetary questions." Mr Whitaker has been long and often enough in office to know what course he should follow. Let us see what he does. One thing, however, is certain. There will be newspapers found enough in Now Zealand to write a favourable history of his administration whether he resigns his directorship or not.
