THE OBSERVER CARTOON.

No. 11.— Mb William- Lodder.

Mb Wm. Lodder, whose portrait in full Masonic regalia forms the subject of this cartoon, is a well-known and highly respected citizen. Though he has not hitherto taken any prominent part in politics or the struggles of parties, he has always taken a deep and active interest in the maritime and commercial prosperity of Auckland. He has displayed great energy in developing our coastal steam services, and in the extension of more intimate relations between Auckland and Fiji. Mr Lodder has always been a most enthusiastic Freemason, and has laboured earnestly for the welfare and influence of the craft in Auckland. He was chiefly instrumental in opening the Masonic Lodge at Eemuera, of which he was the first master, and in inducing the residents of that district to build a fine haH for social reunions, balls, and public meetings. He is Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Auckland under the English Constitution ; and in the absence of the Grand Master, Mr G-. S. Graham, the chief onus of the work falls on Mr Lodder's shoulders. He is also highly esteemed in social circles for his genial temperament and readiness to assist in any movement designed to benefit the district in which he resides, or the community as a whole.
