HERD'S POINT, HOKIANGA.
There is to be a regatta and sports held here on St. Patrick's Day, and there is likely to be great interest taken in both events, as great rivalry exists between the various centres of population on the river.
On Friday last the Pakanae races came off, and nearly all the blood horses of the North competed. G-ough succeeded in pulling off all the events, except the pony race and the consolation, which were won by DeThierry's pony and Derby respectively. Oar local horse Sky sail broke his back in the handicap and died next day. The prizes were paid over at Jones' hotel the same evening, when the successful competitors shouted for all hands. On the following day there was a cricket match between sides picked from the crowd by Messrs Bishop and Gr. Webster, which resulted in a victory for the latter by ten runs.
