THE OBSERVER CARTOON.
No. 6. — Tawhiao, the Maori KijS t gk Weth the present issue of the Observer we present our subscribers -with, the sixth, of the series of full-page cartoons, the subject this week being Tawhiao. This is the first full-length portrait of the Maori King ever issued by any newspaper in the world, and it has been printed on the lithograph stone without any intermediate transfer. The King is arrayed in the royal JcaitaJca, the folds of which are effectively arranged, and he holds in his hand the insignia of chieftanship — a mere pounamu. A single huia feather ornaments his head. The elaborately tatooed features stand out in bold relief, and the artist has skilfully caught the expression of the face. The whole portrait and its surroundings are thoroughly Maori in their character. Tawhiao is the son of the renowned warrior Te Wherowhero, who was crowned under the title of Potatau 1. Tawhiao, or Potatau 11, has three sons and one daughter, and his sister, Tiria, is married to Patara Te Tuhi.
