THE AUCKLAND REGATTA
ACTION'S TIPS,
The entries for the Regatta, to be held on Monday next, will not be received until this (Friday) evening, and consequently my task is not an easy one, when it is remembered that the whole of the intending competitors for each event were not known at the time of writing. My anticipations on the list of probable competitors which I have be able to obtain, and this fact must be taken into consideration if they are cnrapared with the results of the races : — Chami-ion Schooner Race. Sybil (Sinclair) 1 Transit (Hooper) 2 ■ It is expected that the entries for this event will be limited. Lakge Trading Cutters. Rangatira (Tenetahi) 1 Fannie (Ricketts) 2 Mercury or Sovereign of the Seas, should they enter, are my choice to supply third boat or to cause a "boil over." Small Cutters. Henry (Allison) 1 Ganet (Duder) 2 Trading Vessels under 50 tons. Adah, ketch (Jones) 1 Reward, sch. (Anderson) 2 Large Yachts. Toroa (Kissling) 1 Rita (Henderson) 2 Winona (Street) 3 I have not yet seen the Rita out yet, and can only go by what I have heard. First-class Sailing Boats. Magic (Logan) 1 Shrimp (Boyd) 2 Hiwi (Missing Link) 3 Sis for a " boil over." Small Yachts. Jessie Logan (Biggs) 1 Toy 2 Eclipse 3 Second-class Sailing Boats. The Second Eleven West End defeated the Alpha Cricket Club by 18 runs last Saturday week. The All-England Eleven play against the local cricketers on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday next. Ponsonby had the match against United drawn in their favour on Saturday. Kilpatrick played a good innings of nearly an hour's duration last Saturday for only ten runs. Ripley made 24 last Saturday for Auckland fifteen before he was caught by Testro. Tlie match between the Alphas and Onehunga Second Eleven was drawn in favour of the former. The Sybil, Cygnet, and Transit are expected to compete in the champion sailing race at the regatta. Bailey has received an order for a new thirtyfeet string test gig for the Waitara Rowing Club. Russell sends a whaleboat crew to compete at the Auckland Regatta. George Brown batted splendidly for Clark and Sons, getting 41 runs in a short time. West End Second Eleven was defeated by Whau Union last Saturday. Ponsonby and North Shore both send crews for the Allcomers gig race at the Auckland Regatta. Tom Sibbin made 24, not out, for North Shore Second Eleven last Saturday. The match between Gordon and North Shore Second Eleven last Satin-day, was drawn in favour of the latter. The Toroa is being supplied with a new mast for the regatta. Young Logan will not be able to have his twenty-footer ready for the regatta. Lankham, jun., got seven Auckland wickets last Saturday. McG-echie Brown and Woods bowled well in the warehouse match. Cranch made three very good catches in the Alpha and Onehunga match. The Jessie Logan will compete in the secondclass yacht race. The German- warship Habicht will send two boats to compete in the man-o'-war race at the regatta. The Henry is first favourite for the smaller cutter race at the regatta. A united second eleven team goes to Coromandel to play on Monday next. The return match between Alpha and Ponsonby will be played to-morrow. J". Hall, who is a very pretty bat, made 14 for Ponsonby last Saturday. "C. J. Owen put together 16 by good play. It is expected that Yates, of Tauranga, T. Henderson, and Morpeth will be amongst the competitors for the amateur scullers' race. Tom Farquahar will not row in the sculling .match at the Auckland Regatta, owing to the fact that he has heen picked as one of the Ponsonby junior crew.
Mr Henderson's new yacht Rata, built by Biiiley, was launched on Tuesday. She will be ready in time for the regatta. The Magic, Kiwi Missing Link, Sis, and Shrimp are expected to enter for the first-class sailingrace at the regatta. <• Amongst the entries for the large cutter racethere will probably be the Rangatira, Mercury, Fannie, Lizzie, Sovereign of the Seas, Paku, and Tokerau. Hearn, the present sculling champion, has decided not to come up from Wellington to the Auckland Regatta. Robinson batted well against West End last Saturday, and when the sc-.imps were drawn he was 53, not out. Tlie Rata, Toroa, and Winona will compete h_ the first-class yacht race at the regatta. Moore's will the first named, while Jack Bell will pilot the Toroa. Ted and Charlie Owen bowled well for Ponsonby last Saturday, getting seven wickets between them. Mr Waymouth says he does not intend to enterthe Observer for the twenty-foot race at the regatta. She is advertised as being for sale. The Waikato cricketers have arranged for a one day's match with the All-England Eleven on Tuesday next, at Cambridge. A number of gentlemen connected with theAuckland and Northern Clubs have formed a racket club. They will use Gleeson's court. Yates' score of 54, not out, shows that he has lost very little of his old form. The innings was a splendidly played one. He followed it up by another score of 38, not out, last Saturday. The Elsie, Cygnet, Imp, Spray, Devonport,. Nellie, and several other boats are expected to competein the race which has been made for boats under sixteen feet. The Imp has been brought down from Russell to compete in the second-class boat race. The Madge will also be entered, and probably the Queenie and Matthews' new boat. Several others would have competed if the prize had been larger. Tlie Auckland built yacht Thetis, which won the race at the Wellington regatta, had her masts and spars shortened and some ballast taken out before the contest, and her victory is partially attributed to the change. O'Connor played Sweeney at handball for the Cup last Saturday, but could not take it from him— Sweeney winning by two points only. It was the best contested game that has been played for the cup asyet. The open sailing-boat Fraud has changed hands, having been purchased from Dennie Ruttege by W. Kidd and W. O. Duff. Her new owners have had her thoroughly over-hauled, provided with new mast, etc., and intend to uso her as a pleasure-boat, for which she is admirably adapted. She will, in future, -be known as the " Pixy."
