CAP AND JACKET
CAMBKIDGE EACES
(from our own correspondent.)
Cambridge, Thursday. Tlifl weather yesterday was beautiful, but the attendance very poor, on account of its being harvesting time. Clarence won the Hurdles in a walk, with Rawenata second. A protest was entered by Clifford (the rider of Raweuata), on account of the rider of Clarence crossing him three hurdles from the winning post. Clifford stated that Clarence crossed him, and caused Eawenatato fall on his nose. This O'Connor denied, and, after a short time, the protest was not entertained. In the Maiden Plate four started, but Smike bolted off the course, and Mother Bunch's Baby won by ten lengths easily. The Cup was a grand race. Hand wick made the pace the first time round ; and the horses were all in a cluster coming in the straight, and all at the whip. Amidst great excitement, Maori came out of the ruck, and won easily by a length from Lara ; Lone Hand third. Time, 3min. 48sec. Tim Whiffler never was dangerous in the race. Previous to starting for the Cup, the owner of Maori gave him three glasses of whiskey and- two of port wine. The Maiden Steeple was won by Robert the Devil (well ridden by Higgie). In the Soiling Hack Race the " books " were laying three to one on Ben Nevis. After going half round he broke down, and Omega won. Williams (the rider of Sportsman) got a nasty fall in the Hurdles, and is suffering from a slight concussion of the brain, but is out of danger. Jimmy Poole won £400 on Maori in the Cup. Gordon Gooch gave two concerts, but, although the performances were really first class, the attendance was very poor. The office does not open after five. Will wire to-day's racing in the morning. Have made arrangements with a lady friend to write full description of dresses worn at the races in time for next issue.
