BLUE EYES.
" Blue eyes do I most adore ?" Asks the lady at my side, As the waltz from " Pinafore" Leads us through the mazy glide. " Well," I say, "bhie eyes may be Lovely if they smile on me." "Black eyes, then," she still suggests, " Darkest orbs you most may charm," As she softly, slightly rests On niy strong 1 and manly arm. " Dark eyes will not win the day If they will not look my way." " Brown, then— ox-like, pleading orbs," Once again she whispers light, As the claret cup absorbs Twixt her teeth of ivory white. " Yes, I love the hazel bright, If they hail me with delight." " Grey eyes— largest, deepest grey— From them can you turn aside ?" As I lead her right away Back to her stem chaperon's side. Then I utter sotto voce, All the while I fan her closely : " Lift your eyes, look into mine ; Then, if I can read aright, I will say what eyes may shine Loveliest with Love's purple light. Be they black, or blue, or mauve, Time will be the eyes I love."
