MESSRS. GARRETT BROTHERS.

The establishment of Messrs. Garrett Bros., ■with a portrait of Mr. William Garrett of that enterprising firm, is given in this issue. The Brothers Garrett landed in Auckland, December, 1869, and shortly after arrival purchased the Hibernia Hotel property, on which site now stands the present large Boot and Shoe Factory, forming one of our principal local industries, and providing steady remunerative employment for nearly sixty men and boys, and from this establishment have arisen branches at Oamaru, Timaru, Onehunga, Taranaki, Napier, and Gisborne. The firm finding their efforts appreciated by the public, and the demand for goods far exceeding the supply of material determined to prepare their own leather, and in 1877 purchased the Star Flour Mill property at Whau from Messrs. G. W. Binney, L. D. Nathan, and C. Johnston, and on this site consisting of 280 acres, erected a tannery, which now produces the best leather in the province and also finds employment for a number of men. It is to men like the Garrett Bros., who by combining capital, labour, and knowledge tend to promote the well-being of their fellow creatures, advance the interest and prosperity of the Colony they have made their home, and command the respect of all classes by their upright and honourable dealing in conducting their business and so may the firm of Garrett Bros, prosper !
