PEACE CELEBRATIONS
Apparently the Government is desirous of establishing a record for lightning changes mi regard to the Peace Celebrations. The fertile braira of they Miniister of Internal ! Affairs devises a 3 day 8 ■' pageant ! and the: date i s set, then altered to a month later, the whole scheme Affains devises a 3' dlayis' pageant ■ three adopted on a much -earlier date. Now comes another change, back to three days again, accor 1;!^ to the following telegram from tlje Hon. G./.W. • Russell, received ' by the Ma,yor yesterday:— ; "Referring to my telegram of the 4th iaiist., I have now been adv.*ed that Caibinet has resolTed that peace celebfrations shall be eontinaod on Monday, July 215t.,. which shall be Children's Day. I "'regret it is im- ; posfiible to arrange for. s.p pecial trains. The subsidy will h&. pay- ; ablie- }in coanectioW with, approved expenditure inourred in respect 'to celebrations that day in, addition to Saturday, July 19. ,'A copy of His Majesty'a piroclaimatkm. d/eolairirigi. the peace treaty-signed, is btiiiig foi-warded with the .suggestion t•.itit be read at the celebrations.— (Signed), G. W. Russell." A further" wire from the same source states that there will be no Government isoi'bsidy for money iov illumina'tdons in which coal .V'as used. While this does not ;ifi<*;t Thames, it will hit Aucklanid and some other towns very hard. . At a special meeting of the Borough Council held last light * it wae decided to reciommend the Peace Celebrations executive to adhere to it® two days' programme of Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20. *
