The members of the Japanese expedition ai-p reticent. Arriving! fl ff A 7ictoria Land they proceeded along •tho coast to latitude.. 74 degrees south; longitude 171 emst. They saw nothing but iceitt&re's, snow, and penguins, and after four days buffeting, failing to make a landing owing to tho largp quantities of ice, they decided to return. The officers declaim that tho expedition Avas purely a scientific! cue, and that there: was no ,i'ntentioii of an attempt to retaich the Pole. They propose to stay, at Sydney for some time refitting and renewing provisions, and will inuko another attonipt on the Polai 1 regions in the spring.
