EXPLOSION. IN LABORATORY
PHOSPHORUS RiEfTOiRIT BURSTS

An analytical chemisit, Mr S. 0. Priestly, who has his laboratory situated on the top floor of a buildingl in Gore street, had a very narrow escape from serious injury today through the 'bursting of a retort containing! a compound of phosphorus; Priestly was preparing rat poison, and during 1 the course of his work a retort Containingl phosphorus and other diemicalsi, which was standingl over a bunsem burner exploded.
The receptacle was smashed to atoims, flying in all directions, whilst densa fumes immeldiaitely enveloped tho room. Priestly was at the time sitting with his back to the retort. Ha received 1 a sligiit b\im, and the poisonous gases almoSt ovei-powered him. When he attempted to escape from the room the density of the fumes caused him to mistake the whereabouts of the door. The timely appearance of a young man probably saved him life, the soimn of tho man's voice enabling him to get out of the room.
