— t¥i PIAKO FATALITY. « A CHILD'S DEIATB. THE INQUEST. The CJoroner (Mr W. H. Lucas) held an inquest at the hospital this morning touching the death of the child Lilian Maud Stone, aged 2| years, who was so severely burned at her home on the Piako that she suoaunvbed. Sergeant Ore an watched' the proceedings on behalf of the police. Dr. Wa.lshe gave evidence and said that the child was brought to the hospital at albout 5.30 p.m. on the 25th inst. The whole of -the batik of the body was deeply b\irnt, as w©r& also the arms and thighs. ,Slie was in a very low condition from sliodk and died the following momingi at 9.45 o'docik. Death was due to .burns and shock. ■Kjhodia Rose Stone, mother of the deceased, said that on the afternoon of the 25th. she wtent out to gather mushrooms, learning the deceased with two other children ag|ed respectively 4i o.:nd 3| years. She had ibieen absent aibout ten minutes when she heard the children screaming and apparently running towards her throng']', thd sterulb.' By the time she reached the cihild a man named Harry Smith had wrapped his vest around the burning clothe and extinguished the blazei. The cihild was taken into the house, undressed, and flour and oil applied to heir Ibnidy. Mr McCarthy, who Wais passing up the river, was intercepted and immediately turned round and brought the child on to Thames. Hoi-acief Hilton Stone, father of the deceased, who is one of the new Haul'aki Plains settlers, also gave evidence. .'» ' The Coroner returned a verdiict of acicidental death caused by shock and burns.
