LETTER CONCERNING GLAXO.
Wtellinglton, January 15, 1011. To "Hygeia." Dear Madami, —(1) I should be very pleased if you could make an appointmeinjtJ to rn.ee* mJe, either at my office or elsewhere. I have; been Watching your Articles) on Baby Food for sionie time with ai considerable amount of interest.
(2) I have bleem in pei'sonal ctommuniaallon with Dris Huitchinson and and Sltill in London, and think I known somlething' about milk. You are awaaie that we are maiking dried milk in largie quantities', butl I gather from your article of January 14 tliati you have not had "Glaxo" Wroulsfht under your noiticie. This is a variation of the 1 milk, and protaablv if I use the word "humianisled" as you have used it, you will understand that on analyses it (Glaxo) would give almost the •siamje ctompdsition as human milk.
(3) Apartl from this question, the point that interested me most was yourl statement —'"The 'life' has been heated out of them." (That is; out of dried! or otherwise Condensed 1 Milk.) Now 1, this isi a .poinit that Dr. S'ommerville, of Kingfs College, London, atudied for over six mionthsi, and he wias unalble to mak:e this statiement. I am sure he, a,s well as mysielf, would ibiel glad to have your authority for tto ,abfova sitiatemient.
(,4) Hiave you ever, after liquefying the Driedi MElk, tried to utee rennet with it?
(5) I would also fee plelasod to know whiat authority you havo for saying that tha living princdplfS! are lacking in the Dried Milk: (6) If you could give me half an hour, and! sice the various* reports of the Bb!ai-d of Health, Fiusbury, and many others from leading biaby dooton'S in Ebigland, I think I could convince yarn that the prepiar'atiion of "Glo.xo" is mianufalcitured abisolutely to fill all the requirements you desire. .
(7) I also noitliclei thiatj you make lisa of the words; —"the b«iby digested comi>letely." Wiell, I would like to point out thait the highest authorities that We 'consulted, and under wliiom We are aoting, havte pointed out to us that fata are not digested in the ordinary senate, fctwt are absorbed. That Ifi wiiy "Glaxo" i« a miilch bettiter propagation, and much easier of digestion, than any "humanisied" milk. The character of the Oream has been changed into fi fat, and the proteidb are absolutely, soluble and digestible. This latter faclfe has been pi-toiVed in the leading Liondon hospitlal, both on IrJaibies and! also in an artificiial stomach.
(8) We could boast that thei Je is no result to )ye found! in using Dl-ied Milk as there would ible in using, even humanised milk. The difficulty of the dSgesitfidn of thie proteids is albs:«lutely ov'ertbme.
(0) I Vould like to lilavelyour assistance in placing thisl airtide more firmly on tlie/ma.rkeb in K|ew Zealand. We have not) botliered with it so far hetr'ei. Wa a,r'e using all oiir efforts in (?reat Britain where the population is greater.
(Id) I hope this leititeir has noi wteiaried you, but I have a. good deal moire to siay, and I would 1 like ar opportulnitly of saying it.
