BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borougk Council was held last evening, at which were present—On MsGowan, (in the chair), Bawden, Danby, MoAndrew, Sad. ford, Reid, Renshaw, and Wood. ;
The minutes of last meeting were read and approved.—Mr P. A. Phillips, Towa Clerk of Auckland, in reply to an enquiry made, wrote stating that in that city bo license was charged for buggies, but that for private carts there was an annual registration fee: of 2s M exacted.—Mr Jas. Craig jr. reported having; sold bj auction various lota in the Recreation ground amounting in all to £334 15s, of whieh a deposit of one fourth had been paid in cash, and the balaace in promissory notes. He bad received au offer for another lot, which he had under consideration, and as to the remainder of the reserve he would recommend thai they be kept back until early in February when there would be a more suitable time to sell them.—A letter was read from Sergeant P. McGrath, Inspector of Weights and Measures, stating that he had tested the weighbridges of Mr Dickey and the Thames Gas Co., and found that the former was 12lbs za the ton and 71 bs in the half ton light, so that Mr Dickey would be a loser by seeding material over bis weigh bridge. The Gaa Co.'s weigh-bridge he found to be correct. After the question as to whether Mcssri Dsrrow and Bead were entitled to may compensation for the deficieacy in the weight of the rails which they had pur* chased from the Borough and weighed lit Mr Dickey'•weighbridge, had been talked over, no decision was pome to, and the matter was dropped. —The Water Supply Committee report d re the application by Messrs Ma-tin, Cooke, and others, for additional fire plage on Pollen street main, that .the present plugs were quite sufficient for Fire .Brigade purposes, but not so for watering the streets. They, however, recommended that the extra plugs asked for be laid down, provided that those wishing them pay half the cost incurred. They had also au« thorised the laying down of a new l^ieeh galvanised iron main in Abraham Street at a cost, of £80, and a new main ia Moanatairi P oad, under the footway to eott £4. The report was adopted;—A report was) read from the Finance Committee oa tha subject of the Borough contribution for the next four months to the HospiUl and Charitable Aid expenses. The amount w h ich the Borough had to "provide wat £89 10s Bd, and the Committee thought fiat it would be better and. less expensive to meet this present demand by obtaining an advance from the Bank of New Zea« land, and deferring to July next the striking of a rate, which they estimated would be about 4d in the £, sufficient to cover the expenses for the Hospital and Cbari* table Aid for the 1(3 months ending 31st of March, 1887. The report was adopted. —The auction of the Works Committee was called to an alleged obstrcetioa ia Beach road, and that of the Water Sap* ply Committee to, the complaints made to Cr Bawden by, several Tarara road rate* payers of scarcity of water, the Committee to report to the Council the cause of tha aaid scarcity.-—Aecouata aggregating £35 were passed for payment.—The Council decided that the Borough offices be dosed for the Christmas holidays from the 2fta inst. until the 4th January, 1886.—Them being no further business the Council thsa rose; ' ■- i?;- r /■ ' • '■-■ '"■'\-T'.-i-:: ■ ~.
