MINING NOTES.
At the Broken Hill mine, Silierton, at No. 4 shaft unusually rich ore was touched during the week ending December 4th, at a depth of 145 ft. which has since continued for the full width of the shaft and in the sides. It is a kaolin ore, carrying rich deposits of chlorides, the returns reaching to as high as 6000ozs of silver to the ton. It is reported that in the Great Extended Silver-mining i Company's mine, Bavenswood, N.Q., a rich lode, has been discovered at a depth of 650 ft. The formation is sft in thickness, carrying 12 inches of sulphide of silver. Several assays have been made, showing 2000ozs of silver to the ton. .... : V ;,
The Day Dawn P.O. Co., Charters Towers, crushed for the fortnight ending December Ist 582 tons of atone for 13500zs of gold. A difidead of 3a per share has been declared.
A find of gold and silver ore near Ophir Canon, Nevada, Cal., is claimed to exceed in richness anything yet found in the State.
The manager of the Cuningar Mining Company, Harden, states that be has fully demonstrated that gold can be extracted from pyritous ore as easily as silver by the smelting process. A silver lode known as Mason's lead, near Glen Innes, is attracting attention. Twelve tons of ore are to be sent to Sydney for assay. Tests on a small scale give from 60ozs to 280ozs to the ton.
The Mount Gipps Silver Mining Co. recently sent some eight tons of ore to be treated at Melbourne. It yielded 252705s of silver. The ore now at grass ii estimated to yield 50ozs silver to the ton. Mining news from Lyell continues to be of a very satisfactory eharaoter :Ma the United Alpine all bands are busy. The amount of stone crushed during the past month was 750 tons, giving a yield of 18230zs of amalgam, and eight ounces of nuggets from the boxes. The respective weight of the nuggets was 35dwts, 23d wts, and 21dwts, besides a number of smaller ones. The bottoms of the boxes were not raised. The total amount of retorted gold was 627ozs.—The Larnach Company daily expect to strike the south end of the Alpine block.—The Croesus is crushing, and will dean up on the 24th inst. This mine is let on tribute.—The United New South Wales, lying to the north of the Alpine, will start work immediately.—ln the United Italy, work towards the de> velopment of the mine is going briskly forward.—The Tyr Connell people are getting out stone. The mine is to be surveyed.
The latest mining new* from Westport is as follows:—! leading item in local reefing news is the discovery of a 4ft reef in the Smile of Fortune ground, Stoney Creek. The reef was found on the surface, and it shows gold; This claim is in close proximity to the Great Republic— Through a slight accident to the machinery the Great Republic battery was running for four days only last week; ending 10th inst,. During that time 60 tons of stone wej»e reduced, with a yield of 321 ozs 15dwts of amalgam. The total quantity of stone so far crushed is 285 tons for 12640z5. of amalgam. The latest mining news from Reefton shows the quartz-reefing industry there to be healthy. The Hopeful Extended tributers have 110 tons of stone to grass, which is estimated to yield 2ozs to the tou.J [Crushing is I'to^be re-commenced next week, one hundred and fifty tons will be put through.—The Inkerman loir level reef is 6ft thick, it is of good quality, and has been driven on 25ft. A distance of 1970 ft has been driven in the laanga* hua Low Level Tunnel, and small quartz leaders hare been passed through. The next contract is to be for 500 ft. It is in* tended to apply for a Government sub* sidy to start the tunnel from the other end of the line via.: from the left-hand branch end--—The Ingle wood has commenced crushing, and by the end of the year it is expected they will be able to keep the stampers constantly employed. —In the Welcome, No. 8 level is not yet fully opened out, so that a constant supply for the battery cannot at present be de^ pecdedupon.
