A conference took place to-day between Colonel Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, and various Agent-Generals, the object being to decide upon a successor to the late General Scratchley, aa High Commissioner of New Guinea, and to fix the proposition to be paid by the South Australian Colony towards the expenses connected with the establishment of a New Guinea protectorate. The Conference designated John Douglas or J. B. Thurst&n as General Soratchley's successor, but the final selection is yet to be made. Caieo, December 16. The rebels continue firing in the vicinity of Knoshay, and two $f General Oamerons officers have been wounded.
