Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards.

The adjourned meeting of the District Hospital Board took place in the? Borough Chambers last e?ening. Present Messrs Renshaw (Chairman) representing Thames Borough; W. S. Greenville, Thames County; J. E. Walsh, Ohinemuri County ; and J. B. Smith, Piako County. Mr Dean officiated as Secretary, and Mr Miller, at the request of the Chairman was present to ad rise the Board, if necessary, on any doubt as to the interpretation of the Act.—A. telegram was read from Government to the effect that Government conld not grant the request of the Board to continue paying Hospital and Charitable Aid expenses beyond 30th November., The Board would not be required to pay any money until after December, giring them ample time to make arrangements.—Mr Hbniss applied for the position of secretary to the Hospital Board on the ground that he had been secretary to the Hospital for the past 16 years. In the opinion of Mr Greenville, there should be one man to perform the duties of both secretary and relieving officer to the Board. Mr Smith moved that the Board should advertise for applications for the appointment of Secretary, to be sent in before the next Board meeting. Mr Dean offered to undertake all the secretarial and office work in connection with the Board free for 6 months, and it was resolved that the Board accept Mr Dean's offer until snch time as the appointment is filled up permanently.—fie maintenance, Mr Walsh moved that the annual provision for the Hospital be fixed at £2300, half of which will, by the newAct, be paid by the Government, the baU ance to be provided for by the Bosrd front local bodies. This for the next 16 months, ending (March 31, 1887, would amount to £1534 as the Board's share. This motion was seconded by Mr Smith, and carried—Mr Smith thought that the districts should be divided. Piako paid more than all the rest put together, and yet they could hardly send their eases to the Thames. He thought there should be a division, and that each county should have a separate account.—A salary of £60 was appropriated to the office of secretary and treasurer, and it was resolved to in* vite applications for the appointment. The meeting adjourned till the 30th instant.

The Charitable Aid Board held their first meeting last evening, at the conclusion of the Hospital District Board meet* ing. The same members were present ai at the latter with the addition of Mr Colebrook, representing Coromandel. —There was a discussion as to how many members should form a quorum, the Government having in a telegram, which was read by the Secretary, stated that five members was the required number. It was afterwards decided,.however, that in future three should consitute a quorum. —Mr Renshaw was, on the motion of Mr Colebrook, seconded by Mr Walsh, appointed Chairman of the Board. —It was resolved that Mr Miller be authorised to obtain Sir Frederick Whita* ker's opinion as to how the rates should be levied, whether in proportion to the value of property in each County, or whether the Board can itself fix. the amount chargeable to each local body.— The following estimate of the require* ments of the Board for each year was made:—Orphanage, £4/00 (exclusive of buildings); Ladies' Benevolent Society, £100; charitable aid for the Thames Borough and County, £720; Coromandel, £150; Ohinemuri, £150; Piako, £150; and Old Men's Home, £330. Total, £2000.--It was agreed that £334 should be demanded from the local bodies as their contribution up to the 31st March next, and £1000 for the year ending 31st March, 1887.—Mr Colebrook, in moving " that this Board delegate to the Coro. mandel County Council all its powers within district of Coromandel," said that tbe Coromandel District Board bad resolved in favor of separation from Thames in charitable aid matters.—After a brief discussion the matter dropped.—On the matter of the future management of the Orphanage and other existing charitable institutions, a committee consisting of Messrs Renshaw, Greenville, and Walsh was appointed to take the voluntary supervision of these institutions with the privilege of calling in any voluntary assistance necessary.—lt was resolved that the secretary shall also perform the duties of relieving officer, at a salary of £100. An advertisement was ordered to be inserted in the local papers calling for applications for this appointment, to be received at the next meeting of the Bond on the 7th December.—The meeting then adjourned.
