Yesterday. The first meeting of the Obinemuri New County Council was held at noon yesterday. There was a very large attendance of the public—Present, Councillors Nicholls, Cock, Butler, Strange, Moore, Humphreys, Walsh, and Corbett.—Cr Cock moved, and Cr Nicholls seconded the proposition " that Cr F. Strange be chairman pro. tern ," which was carried.— Cr Cock moved, and Cr Corbett seconded "that Mr Edwin Edwards be appointed to act as clerk, pro, tern., and to take the minutes of this meeting," which was carried.—The chairman said that the first business was the election of a chairman for the ensuing year.—Cr Moore Baid he thought it would be advisable to fix the chairman's honorarium first, and he would move that it should be done.—Cr Cock seconded this, and Crs Corbett and others spoke supporting the motion, which was carried.—The Chairman expressed himself as favorable to economy in these matters of salary, and hoped that the Councillors should bear the fact in mind.thatretrenchmeotof expenditure was their raison d'etre. —Cr Walsh moved^that the chairman receive £50 per annum.—Cr Humphreys thought it best to clearly understand what a chairman's duties were before determining his bonus.— Cr Corbett moved as an amendment " That the chairman's salary be £100 per year."—Cr Cock seconded this, and it was carried by five to three, Crs Strange, Humphreys, Walsh being adverse.—Cr Nicholls then moved, and Cr Butler seconded the proposition that Cr Cock be chairman for the next ensuing year, and it was carried unanimously.—Cr Cock then took the chair vacated by Cr Strange, and said that he accepted the pest as a great honor, and that it would be his duty to so carry on the County business as to merit such honor. It had been said that he was adverse to the mining interest, but this he emphatically denied.—Mr Walsh was then deputed as a delegate from the County Council, to the Charitable Aid Board, and the Clerk was instructed to wire to the Colonial Secretary and ac< quaint him of the nomination of Cr Walsh.—Several letters and documents were then received, and ordered to stand over until the next meeting.—A discussion then ensued as to the appointment of a Clerk and Treasurer.. Several Councillors thought the office" should be combined with the Chairmanship; others that it should be combined with the post of Foreman of Works. Eventually Cr Corbett proposed, and Cr Humphreys seconded a motion that the three latter offices be combined, and steps be taken to invite applications for the post with a salary at £200 per annum, which was carried.—Cr Nicbolls proposed, and Cr Moore seconded, and it was carried, that the Bank of New Zealand ba the County bankers.—lt was also decided that Messrs Devore and Cooper be their legal advisers. —Cr Moore proposed, and the Chairman seconded, Mr Edwin Edwards as interim clerk to the Council: this was carried unanimously.—On the motion of Crs Nicholls and Butler, the Council then adjourned till Wednesday, the 25th inst., at 2 p.m. This day. Quarts Samples. The 8 s. Waitoa took this morning four tons of quartz from Waitekauri as sample, two tons from Kiely and party, and two from Ralph and party; also one bau of good specimens from Balph. The stuff is reckoned very good, and the returns should prove satisfactory.
