This day. The Volunteers are not likely to forget the Prince of Wales birthday, for a more uncomfortable day was seldom spent by men under arms. The military arrangements, with the exception of the operations at the .North Shore, were bungled, and the time spent without any practical instruction to the men, ending with a good wetting and genera), dissatisfaction.

The Agricultural Show was also a failure, and the interest in such exhibitions appears to be less each year.

The dedication services of the Jewish Synagogue were very impressive; the interior was tastefully decorated, especially the ornamentation around the ark.

Business will not be resumed to-day, it being still looked upon as a holiday.

Although it was not on the arranged programme, the raid on Auckland, so successfully carried out by Lieut. Parker with a detachment of X avals proves how easily a body of men might be concealed in the scrub above Orakei bay and reach Auckland before being intercepted. Lieut. Parker hoisted the Russian flag at Albert Park, and visited the Bank of New Zealand demanding bullion. Tbe party met but one solitary policeman daring their advance. The Thames Rifle Rangers in repulsing the Navals landed at Tamaki, behaved with great steadiness, and were complimented by Major Shepherd. There is no sign of the mail steamer as yet.

Lateb. The outward English mail is in from Sydney.. . As the sharebrokers are keeping holiday there are no quotations.
