WELLINGTON.
This day.
At Woodville a fatal accident occurred yesterday evening on tbe Tamaki contract, on the Napier-Woodville lino, by a fall of earth. A man named Peter Vidirup was killed instantaneously, and Peter Neilsen had both his arms broken.
It is understood that Government intend promoting Col. Sir Q. Whitraore to be Brigadier or Major-GeneraU This is considered only right as the commandants in the other colonies are generals and have not taken as many men under their commands as Col. Whitmore. The new steam launch which has been constructed for the Defence Department, will be launched to-morrow, and will be named the •' Ellen," after Mrs Ballance, who will perform the ceremony. It is expected that Col. Whitmore will officially inspect tbe Wellington Volunteers prior to his departure for Auckland, where he will inspect the Volunteers at the Prince of Wales Birthday Review.
