New Zealand matters attract considerable attention at Home, as is ohewn by the following, culled from a London paper t—" Perhaps the most extraordinary development as yet attained by belligerent philanthropy is reported from New Zealand, in the shape of a attract within the limits of the publie-bouae young men who would unquestionally bs better outside. Hence, a movement under the auspices of several ladies, for whose philanthropy the reporter vouches, to replace all the Hebes by Ganymedes, and compel the young men to tope for fopiegs' sake, without the excuse of a flirtation. The Legislature has actually been petitioned, and grave statesmen, expert in weighing votesj haye professed themselves not indisposed in principle to this scandalous act of tyranny. The incident is well worth attention, as exemplifying the slender respect of democratic communities for personal liberfy, as well as to what lengths, with what utter contempt of freedom of contract and natural rights, aggressive philanthropy is ready to go in pursuance of its impracticable enterprise of malting people virtuous by Act of Parliament. Tha one redeeming feature is the delightful little bifc of feminine jealousy which, more than even temperance zeal, seems to lie at the bottom of ifc." -.

A meetikg of the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway Guarantors was feed at Chriatcburch yesterday, when the delegates, Messrs Bobeon and Fell, presented a lengthy report. After detailing the efforts which preceded and led to the offer of Messrs Meiggs and Son, the report concluded^-" From infoimation we could get respecting our scheme after it had been carefully considered by those best capable of judging we felt satisfied that it would bo impossible to get it. taken up on a land grant basis only, and tbat the offer of Messrs Meiggs and Son was a reasonable one which desarred the cousidor.tion of Government and tba Souse. We therefore telegraphed the offer to Govern* ment and returned to New Zealand, leaving Mr Scott to take the necessary steps in concluding the contract, should the offer have been accepted by the House. We cannot but regret that in somo quarters this offer made by a firm which occupies so good a position in the financial world should have been treated with each conliunily, and spoken of in such intemperate language, as such behaviour can* not fail to have a damaging effect upon the reputation in England of our fe'low colcnis s as reasonable and intelligent men, and will doubtless materially add to the difficulties in placing any similar scheme upon the London market."

News has beep received by Mp Jj% ■gent in Auckland of a tnQet .successful reduction of fifty tons of ore tent all toe way from the Broken Hill Oa.'s claim at Sjlver'on to LaMonte's furnace at Melbourne.
