The Alleged Scratching of Commotion.
A private cable received in Wellington *" from Melbourne states that Vanguard has split a hoof, and that July {sic) is also amiss. It also states that Commotion has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup—a fact which, if true, has not yet reached New Zealand through the ordinary channel.
The Melbourne Argus, which came to hand yesterday, says that Mason has resigned the charge of Robinson's team owing to a misunderstanding about Thun* derbolt, who has a badly cracked htel. Winchester and Liverpool are the only two of the team that are anything like sound. : \ Uralla was scratched for the Hawkesbury Guineas on Tuesday last. The final ac.ceplors for the race were Lamia, Eagle Grange, Angora, First Chester, Norden* feldt, Cairo, Courtier, and Crystal.
A Sydney paper of lust week says that R. Mason, the welUknown trainer, has severed his connection with the Hon \V. Robinson,
The V.R.C. Derby favourite Newstead has arrived at Melbourne, and is doing steady work. He is said to look the bemu ideal of a Derby colt.
Sydney papen record that Caliban has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. Last Wednesday's Melbourne Sports* man reports that Thunderbolt has a badly cracked heel, and a " little " bird whispers that he is a very unlikely candidate for the V.R.C. Blue Riband honors.
