The Brigantine Gleaner Dismasted.

The brigantine Gleaner, Capt, Urquhart, from Oamaru, for Napier, was sighted between .Bare Island and Kidnappers about 11 o'clock on Tuesday night by the as..Ki»i, ; which was on ita way to Wellington. The Gleaner was burning distress light?, and when the Kiwi bore down on her, she found that she had nothing standing but her mainmast, the foremast baring gone by the board, and her maintopmast; bowsprit, and part of cut water rarried away. The Kiwi at once took her in tow, and had just got fairly started for Nnpier when the present southerly gale struck them, which allowed the Kiwi to come ob under easy steam, arriving of the Bluff at 3 a.m., and got alongside the breastwork between 6 and 7 o'clock. The Gleaner reports having left Oamaru on August 28th with a fresh southerly.wiod, which carried her as far as Banks' Peninsula. She breasted Akaroa at noon on the 29th, and thence had a light north west wind until midnight on the 30ih, when it .gradually freshened to a gale, and at noon on the following day it was blowing almost a hurricane, with a very high and bumpy sea. running. The vessel was making heavy weather of it, and during a heavy lurch carried her foremast, maintopmast, jibboora, and' bowsprit away as well as tearing out her chain plates. At Tepur, while hove to, she shipped a heavy sea, which smashed the boat and gallery, beside? doing other damage about the decks. During the remainder of the gale she drifted about 100 miles to the north' east, after which a southerly breeze carried here in shore, sighting land again on the 7th inst. off Cape Tunpgain, and | was picked up the following night off Bare i Island by the ss. Kiwi. Her cargo is believed to be undamaged, and consists of 860 bags of flour, 30 bags of bran, 11 bags of pollard, 58 bags of potatoes, and 10 bags of wheat, for various consignees. Captain Urguhart has, however, noted a protest for his vessel's protection before her hatches are lifted. The Gleaner is at present alongside the lower end of the breastwork, and presents a very dilapidated appearance, having suffered a most severe knocking about.
