AUCKLAND.

This day.

In a letter just received by Sir George Grey from King Malietoa, of Samoa, referring to the petition to the Queen, the King says:—" It has not been done in ignorance or with any indecision of thought or purpose ; but, on the contrary, it was sent with a clear understanding of its meaning, and it originated in our united and very clearly expressed opinion. Another thing we are desirous of is, that some foreigners should be appointed to assist our Government as soon as the de» cisions of the great Governments are made known.

The actual number of men on parade on Saturday was 784.

The Kaikoura arrived at 9 o'clock this morning.

At a meeting of ratepayers held last night, a resolution was passed affirming the desirability of forming a Ratepayers' Association, whose duty it should be to watch over public interests, owing to the manifest negligence of the present City Councillors.
